FAQs
The following Frequently Asked Questions relate specifically to PhD recruitment. For more general questions about working at the Bank, please click here.
If I am relocating to work in London, will the Bank help me find suitable accommodation?
We may be able to offer relocation support to those new PhD entrants currently based overseas who are relocating to London to work at the Bank. Further details on this will be available if a job offer is made.
How many vacancies are there?
PhD Economist and Internship vacancies vary year-on-year and are related to the needs of local areas.
Does the Bank have a research department?
The Bank does not have a separate research department – instead research is carried out alongside policy work in smaller teams focused on specific areas. PhD economists typically work on a blend of both research and policy analysis. For a better idea of the work you might be involved in, please look at the personal profiles.
I need a work permit. Can I apply to the Bank?
As a registered sponsor the Bank is able to issue certificates of sponsorship to work in the UK. However the majority of roles within the Bank receive large numbers of applications from within the EEA and are unlikely, therefore, to qualify under the work permit system. As such, we strongly recommend that potential applicants from outside the EEA consider whether they would qualify under Tier 1 post study work visa route of the UK Border Agency system before applying, as this would remove the need for a work permit. Please see the UK Borders Agency website for further details.
When will I hear about how my application is progressing?
Please visit our Selection Process section for more information regarding the application timetable.
