Selection Process
We recruit PhD economists through two main channels. When specific vacancies arise, they are advertised here on our website and elsewhere. In some years, we also conduct an annual recruitment round.
The process for advertised vacancies depends on the precise roles being offered but will usually be as described below.
Following an initial sift of applications, a short-list of applicants will be contacted to arrange a telephone interview. The telephone interview is designed to find out more about: (i) the specific skills an applicant has to offer; and (ii) their motivation for applying to the Bank of England. Applicants should therefore expect questions ranging from technical aspects of their thesis to topical policy-relevant issues.
Applicants who are successful at the telephone interview stage will be invited to the Bank for a selection centre. The objective of the centre is to gain more information about the applicant across a number of dimensions including specific research skills, strength of economic analysis, communication skills and interest in policy issues. All offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory references, security clearance, identity check, criminal record check, credit check, proof of qualifications and immigration clearance where appropriate. You will also be asked to complete a medical questionnaire.
