Bank of England

Markets

The Markets directorate is involved in every aspect of the Bank’s work, playing an important role in supporting both monetary and financial stability.

By conducting operations in the sterling money markets, we are able to implement the Monetary Policy Committee’s decisions on interest rates. Our activities here also allow us to meet the day-to-day liquidity needs of the banking system as a whole.

It is essential that the Bank always has access to the most up-to-date information on financial markets. Gathering and interpreting this intelligence is the other key aspect of the work carried out in Markets. To do this, we build relationships with a broad range of individuals and organisations from across the financial sector.

That is greatly helped by our management of the UK Government’s foreign exchange reserves and the Bank of England’s own balance sheet.

Supporting all of our live financial market operations is a specialist risk management area, which ensures that the risks associated with our different activities are fully understood.
